E Zhu (莪术) is part of the category of “herbs that break stagnation” or “move blood” in TCM. In its raw form, it is warm and pungent, often used to invigorate blood, dispel stasis, reduce accumulation, and alleviate pain (especially abdominal masses). When processed with vinegar (醋制, “Cu Zhi”), its function is modified: the vinegar processing emphasises its ability to penetrate and direct the effect toward the Liver and Spleen, enhances its action in alleviating pain, and focuses the effect on locating stagnation.

Therefore E Zhu (Cu Zhi) is especially suited to conditions of abdominal pain, masses, or lumps due to blood stasis or qi stagnation, particularly when the pain is fixed and aggravated by pressure or cold. It may be combined with other herbs that move qi and blood to enhance the dispersing and unblocking effects.
