Gua Lou Zi (瓜蒌子) is a phlegm-moistening, lubricating seed in the TCM materia medica. Its nature is sweet and cold, and its principal functions include moistening the Lung to resolve phlegm, lubricating the intestines to relieve constipation (especially of the dry type), and facilitating the downward flow of phlegm and turbid fluids. It is particularly useful in coughs with thick sticky sputum that is hard to expectorate, as well as in constipation due to dryness.
