Gui Zhi (桂枝) is categorised among the “herbs that release the exterior” in TCM. It is pungent and warm in nature, with a sweet undertone. Its core functions include releasing wind-cold from the exterior (by inducing mild sweating), warming and opening the channels, unblocking Yang, harmonising the Ying and Wei, and facilitating the flow of Qi and blood.
In practice, Gui Zhi is used in disorders of externally contracted wind-cold—symptoms such as mild fever, chills, headache, no or scanty sweating, stiff neck, and body aches. It also supports circulation in the muscles and collaterals, and may assist in conditions of cold obstruction or pain in the chest, limbs, or digestive tract.
