Hai Jin Sha (海金沙) refers to the dried spores of Lygodium japonicum, a climbing fern. It is classed among the “herbs that drain dampness” in TCM. Its nature is cold and its flavour sweet (and slightly bland). Its principal functions include clearing heat and promoting urination, unblocking painful urinary dysfunction (Lin syndrome), expelling stones, reducing edema, and alleviating jaundice or damp-heat swelling.

Because it works to release damp-heat in the lower burner and assist in the urinary tract, Hai Jin Sha is often used in conditions such as painful, burning urination, urinary stones, blood in the urine, edema with dampness, or jaundice associated with damp-heat.
