Huang Qin (黄芩) is a classical heat-clearing herb in TCM. Its flavour is bitter and its nature is cold. Its core actions include clearing heat and drying dampness, draining fire and detoxifying, cooling the blood and stopping bleeding, and calming the fetus when heat disturbs it.

In practice, Huang Qin is commonly used in patterns of:

• Damp-heat in the Lung or Stomach (e.g. cough with yellow sputum, nausea, belching)

• Gastrointestinal damp-heat (dysentery, diarrhea, dysenteric disorders)

• Heat toxins manifesting as sores, swelling, sore throat, abscesses

• Bleeding due to heat (epistaxis, hematuria, hematemesis)

• Fetal agitation due to heat in pregnancy
